How it works

Who the Aged Care Provider Requirements Search tool is for

This web-based search tool has been developed to support the registered providers in the aged care sector to access and navigate the registration conditions, obligations and duties they must meet under the Aged Care Act 2024 (The Act).

The tool is best suited to aged care providers who are registered or are interested in becoming registered. It can show a consolidated list of requirements based on the user's response to questions on their registration categories, services they deliver and how they are funded.

Digital platform operators, aged care workers and responsible persons can use the tool to find their specific requirements under the Act.

Older people, carers, peak bodies and the community can also use this tool to understand the requirements an aged care provider must meet when delivering care.

This tool does not provide detail on how to apply to register as an aged care provider. This information can be found on the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission’s website. The Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission’s website also includes information relating to how they will approach regulating the regulatory requirements detailed in the tool.

How to Use the Aged Care Provider Requirements Search

This tool helps compile the aged care provider requirements that apply when delivering aged care services under the Aged Care Act 2024. The tool allows the user to explore requirements by topic or by creating a summary that is based on their specific circumstances.

1. Start Your Journey

When you arrive at the homepage you can:

  • Select start to answer a series of questions to receive a tailored list of requirements.
  • Explore requirements by topic by choosing a topic that interests you under the heading explore requirements by topic
  • Review more about the tool, how it works and resources by selecting the headings at the top of the page.
  • Provide feedback using the Provide feedback button in the page footer.

2. Choose Your Pathway

To begin the provider requirements search, please select the start button.

You will be taken to a page where you can choose your pathway.

Select the tile that best describes your situation:

  • Registered Provider
You are currently delivering aged care services.
This pathway will guide you through questions about your organisation to generate a tailored list of requirements.
  • Prospective Provider
You are interested in becoming a registered aged care provider.
You'll be asked about the services you intend to deliver. You can explore requirements by selecting different search criteria before viewing your results.
  • I work with or for a registered provider
You are an associated provider, aged care worker, responsible person, digital platform operator or other. Once you choose a selection, the requirements will be displayed.

3. Answer Key Questions

To tailor the results, you'll be asked:

  • Where do you deliver (or intend to deliver) services?
  • What services do you deliver (or intend to deliver)?
  • How are you funded (or intend to be funded)?
  • Are you a government entity?

Each question will provide a 'tool tip' to show more information to assist with answering the questions.

4. View and Manage Your Results

Once you’ve completed the questions, you’ll be taken to a results page showing the aged care registered provider requirements relevant to you. These are displayed as cards in a list format (not in order of priority).

You can:

  • Filter results using the options on the left-hand side of the screen (or top of the page on mobile).
  • Quick view key topics of interest that run along the top of the cards.
  • Download and save your list as a PDF using the export button.
  • Save the page as a favourite in your browser.

5. Edit or Restart Your Search

You can change your search criteria at any time. Use the Previous, Next, Start Again or Skip buttons to move through the tool and update your responses as needed.

6. How to read your results

The Aged Care Act 2024 is organised into chapters, parts, divisions, and subdivisions to make the legislation easier to navigate and apply.

Chapters group the legislation into broad themes, for example, Chapter 3 - Registered providers, aged care workers and aged care digital platform operators and Chapter 5 – Governance of the aged care system.

Within each chapter, parts break down the content into functional areas, while divisions and subdivisions include sections with detailed provisions setting the scope and ability to create rules. The rules are what are know as subordinate legislation and provide a greater level of detail to the expectations set in relevant sections of the Act.

The structure of the Rules does not follow the same structure as above. However, each provision in the Rules must be authorised by a provision within a section in the Act.

The requirements are displayed in a card format with the Act Subdivision and direct link to the Act. The card format also includes the section provision detail and any corresponding rule.
